What do people make of this move? anyone knows anything about how good this company is? CONCORD, Mass.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--May 29, 1996--GenRad, Inc. (NYSE:GEN), today announced that it will leverage its existing position in the local loop communications market with the development of production-ready test solutions for the Asymmetric Digital Subscriber Line (ADSL) market. GenRad is currently gathering customer requirements for these solutions, which will be designed for Discrete Multi-Tone (DMT)-based ADSL systems. ADSL is expected to play a crucial role over the next twenty years as telephone companies enter new markets for delivering information in video and multimedia formats. ADSL is expected to transform the existing information system from one limited to voice, text and low-resolution graphics to a powerful network capable of bringing multimedia to everyone's home or small business in this century. One example of how this technology may be used by a group is as follows. "One person watches a movie on one television; a second person does interactive homework on another television while a third person accesses his corporate Local Area Network (LAN) at high speeds on his personal computer. A fourth person surfs the Internet on her personal computer while a fax arrives from the office."(a) ADSL is changing the way telephone companies think about existing telephone lines. It expands the transmission capability of the copper infrastructure, enabling it to offer simultaneous channels for personal computers, telephones, and televisions -- all while leaving consumers' Plain Old Telephone Service (POTS) undisturbed. Debbie Salle, ADSL Business Development Manager for Motorola's MOS Digital-Analog IC Division, commented on GenRad's announcement, "Motorola is committed to enabling and accelerating the use of standards-based ADSL technology for high speed data access and other advanced services over existing copper networks. We are pleased to work with GenRad in their development of a test solution that will support and benefit DMT-based ADSL modem products in the production environment." James F. Lyons, GenRad's President and Chief Executive Officer said, "This exciting development project is a natural extension of GenRad's position in the local loop communications market. GenRad has been providing test solutions for the Integrated Service Digital Network (ISDN) and analog line card markets to some of the leading telecommunications companies in the world. Our goal is to keep in front of this new technology to ensure that GenRad is there once our customers need us." Mr. Lyons continued, "We are delighted to work with a leader in the ADSL market to understand better the needs of the potential customer base while providing our expertise in production-ready test solutions to the communications market." GenRad, Inc., provides manufacturers of electronic products with software, systems and services that will improve their manufacturing and service productivity. GenRad participates in five core markets, including transportation, contract manufacturing, communications, computers and peripherals and other industrial products. GenRad employs approximately 1,100 people worldwide, of which 30 percent are applications, software and hardware engineers. (a) Based upon information taken from the ADSL Forum.
