1/25/2019 Contest update
Secretary of Commerce Wilbur Ross told one reporter he didn’t understand why the unpaid government employees needed to go to food banks. “Why haven’t they been making money buying biotechs?” Ross asked.
Ok, I made the above up. Ross, who once helped Donald Trump negotiate loans to bail out his Taj Mahal casino, actually said that rather than go to a food bank to get food, unpaid government employees should go to a money bank to get money.
Meanwhile, although rallying after the agreement to end the government shutdown was announced this afternoon, biotechs were still down over the four-day MLK Birthday week. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 11.71% YTD (vs. 14.39% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 13.05% YTD (vs. 14.18% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 14.46% YTD (vs. 15.76% YTD a week ago) and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 7.98% YTD (vs. up 7.87% YTD a week ago).
HOOD’s portfolio, up 26.26% YTD, moved back to first place with SANCTU’s portfolio, up 25.34% YTD, slipping to second place, while DEWDIL’s portfolio, up 22.84% YTD, hopped into third place.
At Friday's close, all 39 Contest portfolios remained in the green, with 15 beating the NBI and 12 still beating the high flying SPSIBI.
The 167 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 13.47% and a median YTD gain of 10.71%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Enjoy the final January weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
