2/1/2019 Contest update
The U.S., this afternoon, officially suspended its nuclear arms control treaty with Russia. But experts say the treaty suspension has less to do with Russia than with China, in that the treaty has constrained the U.S. from building more nuclear weapons to counter China’s growing arsenal. As noted by the Union of Concerned Scientists, our stable genius POTUS once “wondered aloud why we have nuclear weapons if we wouldn’t use them.” Is it really... I guess I’m OT.
Along with the broader market, biotechs had a decent week and began 2019's second month with a happy face. At Friday’s close, the Contest median was up 13.33% YTD (vs. 11.71% YTD a week ago), the Nasdaq Biotech Index (NBI) was up 13.99% YTD (vs. 13.05% YTD a week ago), the smaller-cap S&P Biotechnology Select Industry Index (SPSIBI) was up 16.64% YTD (vs. 14.46% YTD a week ago) and the Nasdaq Composite Index (NCI) was up 9.47% YTD (vs. up 7.98% YTD a week ago).
HOOD’s portfolio, up 32.21% YTD, had a superb week and remained in the Contest lead. SANCTU’s portfolio, up 27.49% YTD, held on to second place, while RKRW’s portfolio, up 25.82% YTD, jumped into third place.
At Friday's close, 38 of the 39 Contest portfolios were in the green, with 18 beating the NBI and 12 still beating the pumped SPSIBI.
The 167 Contest stock picks have an average YTD gain of 16.01% and a median YTD gain of 12.29%.
Below is the Top Ten list. Also below are the Top 5 & Bottom 5 Stocks for the week ranked by % Gained and % Lost YTD. (Prices not converted to US$ in these Tables.)
Portfolio adjustments: None.
(All corrections, especially adjustments for splits & mergers, greatly appreciated.)
Have a safe and relaxing Super Bowl LIII weekend biotechies!
Peace & good health,
Bulba
