Anyone notice the absence of cut rate deals on Zips the past 2 weeks?

That tells me that inventories are getting smaller at retailers as Iomega is getting ready to lower prices so that the regular retail price becomes $99 very, very soon.

At $99, as fast as Zips flew off the shelves in December, they'll fly off even faster this quarter.

If inventories were high, we'd be seeing more ads these past 2 weeks. With Iomega shipping 1 MM zips per month, these have been blown out in the fourth quarter.

Another great reason to think that Q4 earnings will be fantastic!!!

Just a WAG on the Zip internal drive [alleged] shortages noted in this thread:

Might it be that the shortages are not due to Iomega? Several folks have noted that there are no internal Zips at Best Buy, Circuit City, Fry's, etc., and I have seen the same. Further, the salespeople tell me "We've not been able to get them in for months," "They've been discontinued," and other similar tales of woe. However, when I talk to any one of the several small computer shops around, they either have one there I can purchase or can call the wholesaler and get one within a matter of days. This happened most recently last month when I needed an internal Zip for my home machine (actually, I got it through mail order because I saw the post on this thread with the ridiculuosly low price).

Perhaps BB, CC, F, the other big chains, have decided not to carry the internals because it is not worth the trouble to them to provide minimal tech support to the largely neophyte customer base for the profit involved in the transaction. They sell CD-ROM's, modem cards, video cards, etc., but I would bet the profit:tech-support ratio is much higher in these cases. The small computer stores, on the other hand, probably know their clientele much more personally so that they can know whether to suggest that they install a drive for a customer or provide phone support when something goes wrong in a do-it-yourself install.

You computer professionals out there, any thoughts?

Cameron
