Janet,

I'm relieved to know that sucking on the nicotine patches is okay. I know it seemed okay for me to do it, but I didn't want to suggest to anyone else that it was a good idea.

I really envy the people who are able to smoke only occasionally or only at will, for such does not seem to be in the cards for me. Either I smoke way too much or I don't smoke at all--there seems to be no middle ground for me with smoking.

The longest I ever quit for was six months, achieving that remarkable (for me, at least) milestone using the nicotine gum. Only trouble was I chewed the gum almost constantly, trading one addiction for another, but that was okay. It was when I devloped the beginning symptoms of temporomandibular joint syndrome that I went back to smoking. There were other factors involved with my resuming smoking at that time, but the TMJ symptoms were the biggest reason. I sometimes think I like the gum even better than cigarettes.

What you and I definitely can appreciate is that quitting smoking is just about the hardest thing that there is to do. It seems that each time I have quit--and there have not been that many times--I go through all the tortures of Dante's Inferno, only to start smoking again. You'd think I'd never want to experience the "quitting experience" ever again, but it doesn't seem to work that way for me or , obviously, for other relapsing smokers.

Yup, we Californians haven't a clue as to how to handle inclement weather. We complain about the drought, then we complain about rain when it finally comes. Be sure to let us know how the fort holds out through the flooding.

BTW, may I ask what area of medicine you specialize in?

Holly

it was found that it was rare to find smokers amungst pts with ulcerative colitis. I think that they were considering the patch as treatment...

Well hey, let's give nicotine its due. Twin studies indicate that smoking reduces one's chances of getting Alzheimer's by a great deal. This seems to me to be important. Frankly, heart disease, lung cancer, or Alzheimer's? No contest.
