Yes, they did and right now its the President who is trying to suppress speech that hurts his feelings. He won't be successful. Not to worry.

"they were smart enough to enshrine freedom of speech into our Constitution."

They were also smart enuf to restrict it to Congress, and by implication, the states; "Congress shall make no law respecting ". If they had wanted every newspaper to print everything submitted to it, and every book publisher to print all manuscripts, it would have read, "Neither Congress nor anybody else shall make a law respecting...".
