People who live in very cold climates like Canada all know cold greatly reduces the ability of all batteries to provide a lot of power quickly. They often keep warmers around their lead acid car batteries so they provide enough electricity to start the car in the morning.

Current lithium batteries operate best between 10 C and 50 C, and can provide power less quickly down to -40 C.

I guess looking on the positive side, not being able to get into your car (on cold days) should keep the mileage down on the speedo.

Maybe a door lock heater button on the key fob?

Very timely topic, as Tesla buys San Diego based Maxwell Technologies today.

Maxwell supplies high-capacity [url]=https://www.maxwell.com/products/ultracapacitors]ultra-capacitors[/url] which can store and discharge electricity much faster than batteries and without wear - and are unaffected by temperature.

Maxwell is a former government contractor which worked on projects which required massive bolts of power. Maxwell previously sold their high-voltage capacitor division off to General Atomics.

Very timely topic, as Tesla buys San Diego based Maxwell Technologies, which designs patented super-capacitors which store and discharge large amounts of electricity far faster than batteries and without the wear batteries experience. In industrial grids Maxwell has built installations providing a 20 second reserve of 3 MW / 17.2 kWh to mitigates voltage sag.

Charging and discharge of capacitors is also unaffected by ambient temperature. A typical use for super-capacitors is regenerative-braking and acceleration. - en.wikipedia.org

Maxwell is a former government contractor which sold their high-voltage capacitor division to General Atomics and works with SK Group creating capacitor-lithium battery hybrids for cell phones.
