Well, Penni, I think the partial birth abortion issue IS an extension of the discussion about when life begins. And it is also part of the debate in American society about some compromise between reconciling the rights of women to control their own reproductive lives and the genuine horror that the pro-life people have about over a million abortions being performed here every year.

While I'm sure everyone has a different opinion about when life begins, there is NOTHING that happens after the moment of conception that changes whether a baby is created or not, so I would have to say life begins then. I think what we are really discussing, though,is some generally acceptable national compromise on the point during pregnancy when it becomes so reprehensible to interrupt the process that the rights of a healthy fetus become dominant over those of the mother.

In the sources I read on the web, one of the statistics is that in a survey, most Americans believe that partial birth abortions should not be done unless the actual life of the mother is in danger, or the fetus is dead. But one of the reasons I am interested in discussing this issue is that I had assumed partial birth abortions are very rare, and used only for these reasons. Looking around at different sources, I find this may well not be a true assumption at all.

What do you think?
