>>>> Joon, re: "It's the SCSI internal retail drives that seem to be in shortage." Sorry, I'm sticking by my story. I just called up two local dealers, asked specifically about an internal SCSI Zip, both said they did not have any there, and put me on hold for a minute to check with the wholesaler they used (I have no idea who, for either shop), and said they could get one within a couple of days because they were in stock at the wholesaler. <<<< Perhaps they did have something in stock at the moment. Perhaps it was a SCSI internal drive from an OEM 5-pack. (The OEM 5-packs have been more readily available.) But the shortage of SCSI internal retail drives (which is what we were talking about) isn't a figament of anyone's imagination. The shortage during Q2 and Q3 could have been blamed on the overall shortage of Zip drives, but even now into Q1 of 1998, the SCSI internal retail drives are still out of stock. >>>> BTW, as for "I was hoping to see the ATAPI Zip in retail boxes soon," one of the shops suggested I get an ATAPI which they had there if I wanted a Zip today (did not say if it was in a retail box, however). I really don't think that it is Iomega which is "restricting" the supply, but the big chains who can't (won't) carry everything for everybody, and this is where they stopped. <<<< It's not just the big chain who don't have them, it's everywhere. Check out any on-line computer vendor. No one has any in stock. Even the largest vendors who carry tens of thousands of Zip drives are almost continuously out of stock on the SCSI internal retail Zip. And even when do get them, it's only a few hundred and they're gone in a couple of days. But at the same time, the OEM 5-packs are available. So at this point I'm backing off my original hypothesis, which was that Apple was taking all the SCSI internal drives that Iomega could make, and proposing the idea that perhaps Iomega is restricting the flow of the SCSI internal retail box because of technical support problems with it. Imagine the average customer who buys a SCSI internal retail box from CompUSA. He takes it home, can't get it working, and returns it. I'm not sure what CompUSA would do with it, but I would guess it gets returned to Iomega and becomes Iomega's problem. But by selling the 5-packs to OEMs, the OEMs will take care of helping the customer getting it working and much less likely for the drive to get returned to Iomega. I'm not saying I'm right, but will you agree with my rational? If not what do you propose as a more likely reason for the shortage of the SCSI internal retail Zip drives? Joon
