Addi, I know what you mean. We have examples every day in my local newspaper of people's total inhumane behaviour towards others.
Not on such a scale as is happening in Algeria, but just crazy individuals who kill and maim other human beings for no reasons other than greed and jealousy. I guess we all feel helpless to do anything to fix these problems except for trying to lead decent lives ourselves and protecting our own families from these people who have no regard for human life.
As you point out, the price of SUNW pales into insignificance compared to other events in the world.
Unfortunately, I don't think things are improving, at least they don't seem to have in my life time. All the violence that kids see on television does not bode well for the future.
As always, just MHO.

Addi,re:"off topic..60 min.". Amen. Someday, we'll feel guilty of
this 'capitalism metallity' as well.

I know the 'equation' is much more complex than I can understand.

I always pitch this example of 'simple corporate world model':

The world has this 1 company, 1 executive, 1 investor, 1 employee.

Total revenue is $10000, executive get 3000, employee get 500.
profit $6500 somehow goes to investor.

Then the smart executive find out he can get a replacement of the
employee for 200. This make more profit and the investor is happy
and split the 'extra profit' with the 'executive'.

There is no BLOOD. No bodypart is lost. Actually we LIKE the
'aggressives and shrewd management'.

Unfortunately, there is no perfect world. This is the ONLY reason
I see the necessity of RELIGION. It's a human's cry for HELP of
not knowing what one's life mean... Sorry if offended anyone.

Algeria is in focus these days...but brutal killing of
ordinary people by people indulging in political power
play has never really been stopped....

Now it is Algeria....
Before that it was Bosnia, Rwanda etc...
Before that it was Sri Lanka, Iran, Iraq etc...
Before that it was Central America...
Before that it was Cambodia, Laos etc...
Before that it was Indonesia, Malaysia....
Before that was India, Pakistan etc...

And I have probably missed some massacres or mentioned them
in wrong order, but I hope you get the point about recent
world history.

Closer to home, I wonder which place has the "Murder Capital of
America" crown (highest per-capita homicide rate)

Recent "winners" have been Washigton DC, and East Palo Alto etc.
which exist a stone's throw from "wealth and tranquility".

Connection to this investment board is that "pure capitalism"
often overlooks corruption ("So what if he is a dog...he is our
dog" phrase from cold-war days). A PBS program yesterday (did not
catch the begginning of it tried to focus on troubles of American
non-high-tech middle class as focus on bottom line drives their
jobs to low-wage economies while there are no alternatives left
for them. Maybe that can lead to crime and violence here...

A recent posting on TI thread...

exchange2000.com

tries to make a case for more openness and transparency in
Asian economies. But from what I watch in the News, the
"economy" of Indonesia's First Family seems to have gotten
away with slap-on-the-wrist while the ordinary people will
take the bitter medicine.

No answers here, but maybe someone here will become a billionaire,
get into politics, run for office (a la Ross Perot) and try to
make a difference. :-) Other than that in a few days we will be
back to watching our portfolio, stock price and less about what
happens half way around the world :-(

Addi. You are right, the western civilization don't really give
a lot of attention to the terrorists attacks in Algeria. SUNW, MSFT
going up and down couple points could mean thousands of dollars in
our pockets, while several hundred lives in Algeria probably meant
nothing in terms of dollars and cents to us.

You know, some times I wonder whether lives in 3rd world countries
mean as much as lives in 1st world country. If thousands of people
die in India, China, Iran because of famine, earthquake, or some other
natural diasters, it hardly made any blips in our news headlines. If
the same thing happens in US, Germany, Britain, it would be like the
top story of the year. But even in our Western society, lives aren't
equal either. I bet the society will treat Bill Gates daughter
differently than yours or my daughter. I watched Titantic over the
weekend. In the movie, the 1st class passengers had a much better
chance to get on the emergency live boats than the 3rd class
passengers. There are still social classification in this society,
maybe not to the extend of 1912 Britain. Oh, well, that is just life.
I don't like it, but I have to live with it. Now get back to SUNW...

And that's kind of the point, why we spend so much time following our stocks, our politics, our sports teams, whatever. Otherwise we might accidentally look around and realize we live in a universe where life is meaningless at best, and torturous at worst...

Go Sunw! Go Broncos!

I was wathcing CBS's 60 minutes
last night and their first story was about Algeria and how local terrorists (whether they
are the government soldiers or Islamic fanatics) attack villages and eliminate entire
families by cutthing their throats, burning them alive or just killing them as if a chiken is
being cut in pieces.

And I complain about MSFT's tactics for eliminating competition!
