Yes, you are right, in both examples, the couples were unable to function socially.

I wondered if the teenage man and woman killed their infant because they were unable to cope with their situation. They seemed like ordinary teenagers. They had never been in trouble with the law before, as far as I know.

I wouldn't underestimate the power of simple sloth. Putting a kid up for adoption is, like, a hassle. Convenience kills.
