I think this was a very wise design decision by 3Dfx. It would have been a bad thing to go the Verit‚ way with a kludgy 2D solution in the chipset, and not even 3Dfx could have done what they did for 3D and beat Matrox at their game at the same time.

Um, as very happy owner of a Stealth II with the Rendition Verite 2100 3D chip I can tell you there is nothing kludgy about the 2D part of it. If you are judging by 2D benchmarks don't put too much faith in them. I also own a Matrox Mystique 220 which is a great 2D performer in benchmarks but in the real world when I compare the two cards side-by-side there is no visual difference in speed at all in normal windows apps. It only shows when you run some game in DOS mode at 320x240 mode but who the hell does that anymore?

The competition from Rendition is not to be taken lightly. The V2100 is slower than Voodoo in 3D but the image quality is incredible and the price is hard to beat. I got my Stealth II for $99 and there are plenty of other happy owners around. GLQuake2 runs superb on my V2100.
Even Brian Hook of IDSoftware was really impressed with the V2100.

Oh, you probably think I am short on TDFX? No way! I am a happy long since low 20's because they are way ahead of the competition, hell nVidia is still writing alpha mini-gl drivers for the Riva, but don't get complacent and don't shrug off the competition like Rendition so easily. Voodoo2 will keep 3DFX ahead again for a long time to come but inexpensive, good quality but not necessarily the fastest 2D/3D combos like the V2100/V2200 could easily eat into 3DFX's bottom line. Last I heard Stealth II sales have been very robust and being an owner of one I undestand why.
