Keeping a design from 1967 keeps the development cost and the sales price very low.

The 787-max costs $121 million for 160 seats ($760k per seat), plus an operating cost of $44 per passenger hour with a range of $3,500 miles.

The 737-max development cost was $3 billion ($1.8 billion plus $1.2 billion to develop the engine).

The politics of aircraft sales, and "the politics of you feeling good" is a low price.

The all new 787-8 Dreamliner has 242 seats for $250 million ($1,030k per seat), plus operating costs of $21 per passenger hour with a range of 8,500 miles.

The longer 787-10 has 330 seats for $339 million (about $3 million per seat!) with similar per seat operating cost but a range of only 7,500 miles.

The 787 development cost was $32 billion.

Spending that kind of development money on a short-haul aircraft would make for a very costly product.
