"But subsidizing people simply by virtue of their membership in a group does violence to the very notion of individual rights and essentially impairs the liberty of all American citizens". That was a great deal of Dr. King's message except he was saying it from the Black perspective, where their labor at low prices in fact subsidized the wealthier classes - from the slaveholder of earlier times to the factory owner whose wage burden was less by virtue of the held down group who were effectively denied good educational opportunities, access to capital, etc.

"violence to ...individual rights" and "impaired liberty" - try living a life where those conditions were day-to-day realities. I suspect we who have not really don't have a clue, but even so we are impacted by his words of a dream (an unfulfilled reality then and only partially so now) of people being judged solely by their character and their ability...the American Dream but not for all.
(sorry for being so Off Topic - but that was the topic of Monday).
