While I do like being able to smoke when and where I like (because it's convenient for me) I'm not opposed to the idea of designated smoking areas. In the last century "smoking rooms" were common. Lighting up was forbidden in the drawing room; those who wished to smoke (usually men; usually after dinner) did so in the room reserved for that use. Not that great a hardship, and it does make smoking a conscious decision and not an idle habit, indulged in automatically (as it is by most of us).
