Because of the weakening magnetosphere due to the magnetic pole shift, the risk of grid damage from a solar event is significantly magnified. A well aimed CME won't even have to be particularly large to turn out the lights. Ironically, due to progress and our subsequent dependence on the products derived from that progress, humankind is facing some incredibly unique probabilities in the coming decades. And those are on top of the "usual" GSM effects.
