<<We would have a great situation if they just dismantled the telcos completely and replace the whole infrastructure (rest of rant elided)>>

This is your lucky day. James Crowe has just announced formation of a new company, Level 3, that intends to build a nation (or perhaps world) wide fiber optic network completely routed, that will carry voice and data transmission without telco switches. It sounds like a pipe dream, but this guy is nothing if not a visionary. (I know the type, I live in Atlanta and have to listen to Ted Turner all the time.)

I hope you appreciate this. It took me 15 minutes to run down the article, which I read in print today at lunch. This has to be the most underreported story of the week.

<<We would have a great situation if they just dismantled the telcos completely and replace the whole infrastructure with a new computer based system.>>

Johnathan I would hope that there is an understanding that nothing comes for free. How can we expect phone companys (or any business) to take on the investment of updating technology without someone paying for it?? The doggy system is still the best voice system in the world bar none. It is time for telco's to move forward and they will, but don't expect them to make investments and let ISP's get the use of it for free then we would all be in trouble.
The issues are very complex. By the way why can't ISP's get access to the cable TV lines? At least there is some activity in making the ROBOC's compete.

<..This could pop quite high; up into the mid-20's even...>

Could be, but I'd be surprised to see it that high short term, unless AWRE $$ CONTRACTS are announced. I'll be happy with 16, maybe even 17, though I doubt we'll see it. If we DO get there or above, I'd consider shorting (short term), lacking any substantial justifying $$ contracts.
