The preferred pronunciation is with the long i, but the short one has become the more commonly used. So if you're a purist, you just won't use it or decide to accept ridicule.
Alex poopoos my AHD, but I really am growing to love its little usage notes. About "short-lived", they say,
The pronunciation (-long i)is etymologically correct since the compound is derived from the noun 'life', rather than from the verb 'live'. But the pronunciation (short i) is by now so common that it cannot be considered an error. In the most recent survey 43% of the Usage Panel preferred the short i, 39% the long i and 18% found both equally acceptable.
