I think our minds recognizes patterns, pattern recognition is a large part of any IQ test. Our minds are wired to look for patterns in almost everything. Facial recognition is pattern recognition, our minds see a face and instantly know the pattern as being familiar or strange. Building one of those pendulum machines might be a little tricky. I suspect the pendulum length must be exact of each ball, or the pattern won't form. I might give it a try with the nut one. That length can be easily adjusted.
