RE:"The projected cut of about 80 billion Yen equals about US $6.3 billion"

Not to be too picky John, but I think you're off by a factor of ten.
With the exchange rate hovering around 129, 80 billion yen = @ 0.62 billion dollars.

jess.

Thanks for the link, but it was to the current edition and I couldn't find the semi equipment article you mentioned. I got the 20-40% figures from the WSJ online yesterday, and these were hard news quotes from the companies involved, not "analysts" interpretations or estimates.

<<The projected cut of about 80 billion Yen equals about US $6.3 billion, or about one seventh of Intel's capital spending budget for 1998>>

Your figures for both Japanese spending and for Intel's semi equipment budget are not even in the ballpark. I suggest as a starting point, if you want to make the comparison, that you use Intel's recently announced figure of $5.4 billion in 1998 semi equipment spending, up from $4.5 billion in 1997.

John,

I want to thank you for a series of good posts lately, particularly the one about Japanese spending.Misnformation was being spread unintentially, and I had just figured out the huge drops in Japanese spending being projected were not accurate when you posted.

Chalks and thread,
I read this article in Semiconductor Biz News. Apparently Korean semi companies are expected to reduce capital equip spending by 50 percent which has been pretty much anticipated on this thread. Seeing it confirmed in a news article was a bit ominous to me anyway, although it was no surprise. Here's the link. techweb.cmp.com. Some posters reporting news stating there will be a 20% increase in spending for equipment in North America, is that right? I didn't go back and check. Anyway time will tell if order increases elsewhere will take up the Asian slack.

regards,
AZ
