Lee swore an oath to the UNITED STATES...not to Virginia.....and sorry but the war was all about slavery...anything else was a side show or made up after the fact....but you are right about it being also about money....since the largest monetary asset in the south was slaves....slavery is just one of many atrocities committed by a country that claims some kind of moral high ground over the rest of the world....the USA surely has had great moments....but not enough to wash the many SINS away....LEE was lucky he wasn't hung but only had his home Arlington taken from him and turned into a cemetery

Where the hell did you learn your Civil War history? SLAVERY WAS THE MAIN ECONOMIC REASON for the CSA cause. Typical TrumpPUNK. Make comments as if they were facts. FACT: LEE and all those supporting the CSA were TRAITORS. Their "states rights" were to KEEP SLAVERY AS AN INSTITUTION. Stick to stocks and the markets. You are an idiot when it comes to history.

Sorry, Winfastorlose, but I'm with RDK on this one:
But the truth of the matter, is that slavery was only a minor issue with respect to that war.
Slavery was the primary political issue that divided the North and the South. There were many other issues, of course, but this was the big one.

Slavery factored into many different aspects of society besides economics. There was obviously a racial component to it. There was a theological component as well (e.g. Did the Bible really condemn slavery?). There's a cultural aspect, especially rural vs. urban that should be familiar today. And of course there was the question of federal power vs. states rights.

I don't doubt that the picture is much more complex than what the snowflake SJWs portray. But I for one don't think there is any value in downplaying how prominently slavery factored into the picture.
