Brendan and Jelrod3: Thanks for two great contributions to the thread. The warning on 8 Jan knocked enough air out of the balloon to mitigate the effect of the events yesterday, as far as I am concerned.
It was difficult for the conference call to be upbeat after the dissapointing earnings. I am not worried about the SCSI market and am pleased at a renewed focus on cutting costs and think the marketing initiative is overdue. (I still believe, as I posted some time ago, that Adaptec should get away from its extremely bland and dull nominclature of its products. I am not one to polish a turd, but Adaptec's products are first rate and should be given names that stick. It is surprising that a company that puts so much creative effort into its annual report has missed the boat on marketing.)

Looks like we have at least 6 months of waiting for the adjustments to have an effect on earnings. I hope I'm wrong. Just my opinion.

Again, thanks to both of you for the postings.

CEO Saviers on interface technologies that compete with SCSI on servers:

"It is absolutely the standard for how storage and other
peripherals connect to servers," he said of SCSI technology.
"And that's really the heart of our business - the server side of
the market."

Jumping in late on this, but what it's worth:
-SCSI benefits are mainly in mult-threaded I/O environments
(e.g., Servers). IDE performance in the single disk environment
is as good as SCSI, less expensive, and a whole lot simpler. Disk
drives are climbing in capacity faster than the typical desktop user
requires, hence there is less and less need for SCSI in the typical
desktop situation.
-Adaptec's technology assets extend way beyond SCSI, but some of their
investments here may take a long time to play out. Example IEEE1394, which right now is losing mindshare to USB.
-It isn't in the best interests of system vendors to adopt any of
Adaptec's technologies they're not forced to for reasons of function because of Adaptec's historical strategy of maintaining
prices artificially high. You don't see Adaptec's SCSI chipset, for
example, embedded in many high-volume system boards. The Intels, Compaqs, Dells and Gateways of the world will pursue imbedded lower-
cost solutions.

Nevertheless, I continue to hold Adaptec for the longer term.
