Socialists make the mistake of thinking collectivism and being fair and sharing and caring works when done by governments. It does not. It's actual carnage. If people know they have to provide for themselves, or else, they'll be more inclined to do so. If they don't too bad for them. Being seduced by the "we care" blandishments of politicians is a road to ruin, pain, suffering and death. They don't care using their own money. They care with opm after taking most of it for themselves. Then they make sure their family and friends are looked after first.

When I was young, ignorant and naive, I was in favour of socialized medical treatment and welfare. Now I'm not. I have witnessed up close and personal the failings of the state including various deaths [latest being my beloved niece, age 49, a month ago due to useless socialized medical malpractice]. The welfare I'd provide via opm would be so basic that it would be like the single men's camp I lived in and worked at decades ago. People would want to get out. It would be like a camp for Uighurs [which I guess does not include much in the way of mod cons]. But people would be free to leave any time.
