Great thread..I just bought a micron about 6months ago for $2,000 its worth about 500 now.. I have pushed around the idea of building from the ground up(my wife is going to strangle me) some people like fast cars I like fast computers. If cost are anyones concern I would suggest saving money and not buy the fastest processor. You will get better performance for your $ by getting the most RAM you can and the best graphix card u can. I believe Computer shopper(see S.W. thread link) has a feature once a year similiar to this thread.

"Stuck with my 14.4 in Rural Arizona"

Ways to increase you internet speed:
1. By far the best idea would be to move!
2. If you have a thick wallet, you could go with Satellite.
3. Since you have two phone lines already, the cheapest way
would be to buy a new kind of modem recently released
by Diamond. Its a modem that has two 56K modems hooked together.
You hook two phone lines into it and your speed doubles.
Check it out: diamondmm.com
SupraExpressII - $199 (has two 56K hooked together)
Shotgun Modem: - $125 you hook this 56K modem up to your already in use modem for increase in speed. I call this technology
a "Poor Man's ISDN".

Hope this helps.

Slow Modem ... I run Net Medic as I surf. I got a trial version with the Netscape Communicator. It is a pretty good trouble shooter and helps you optimize your surf experience. It lets you know where the bottlenecks are and proposes fixes. It enabled compression for my modem after asking me if it was OK to do so. I can always tell if my ISP is slow or my CPU or the net site.

You can get a trial version from vitalsigns.com The version I use let me run the full application for 30 days, now I am stuck with the limited version unless I fork over some more bucks.

Have you looked into the satellite ISP service? I think it's called
something like Direct PC ? Sorry, I didn't retain any more info, as
it didn't meet my needs.
