Maybe you think you are a hardass, Alex, but it is hard to imagine you being one when little Helen starts working her wiles on you. Baby girls watch their mothers to learn how to handle men, and are quite proficient at manipulative skills like pouting, side-long glances and eyelash batting by the age of two. Most girls have their daddies wrapped tightly around their little fingers by the age of three. I do think that children respond best to the truth, when delivered in an age-appropriate manner. If your little girl understands that cats and dogs make daddy very sick, she will feel much better about not having them than if you just tell her 'no', in my opinion.
