As long as the Ladies are wearing a single seatbelt, all my ramblings of parenthood must have a certain bemused hypothetical quality. But I learned this from my parents: an unqualified but firm "No." brooks no argument. If my child has a repeated problem with that, I'll figure there's a breach of behavior occurring. Reasons for the "No" are well and good, but compliance without condition must first be secured. I have an issue with some of these nouveaux parentx I see trying to appeal to a toddler's sense of fair play in the grocery store. These things aren't negotiated, they're imposed. To me, one of the secrets of being a good parent is choosing with care what I'll impose. I seek a balance between good behavior and native curiosity. I imagine that balance will depend a great deal on Rugrat's personality. Good thing her momma's a big sweetie.
