John - <OFF TOPIC AGAIN>

Why were Liberals AWOL during the "Cold War"?

They weren't. They were just duping a different portion of the public in a different way so that the US Govt. could keep on pouring billions of taxpayers money into weapons and support for third (and second, and first) world dictators to kill their citizens with. Same end result, they're just keeping the lid on for a different group of people.

What chutzpah. Ironic is not the word for it. If what you say is true then they're "Johnny come
latelys".

Putting it in a historical perspective, it is understandable why, at one time, a large part of the US population gravitated towards the Communist Party. The main reason was because the US capitalist system was failing them. The rich were getting richer, while the average blue-collar working stiff got stiffed. Crappy wages, no minimum wage standards, no maximum working hour standards, child labor, unsafe working conditions... you name it. They were not sharing in the growing wealth that was building in a large part due to their own toils. The threat of civil unrest and Communism is what made the government and business to react to change things for the better. Many blue-collar workers felt that joining the Communist Party was the only way to exert any power, by uniting in numbers. Whatever you feel about the Communist Party, you have to understand the conditions under which it thrived. Had Big Business been proactive rather than reactive, the Communist Party never would have thrived.

WAY OFF TOPIC: >>>Why were Liberals AWOL during the "Cold War"?<<<

Hmmm. Seems to me the height of the cold war was run on our side by the liberals. You know, Johnson, Humphrey, Kennedy. Ever hear of those guys? Same thing in Europe, in the 1960's. It is true that Carter helped dissassemble the radical right dictatorships in south america, but he was hardly AWOL during the cold war. In point of fact, he was a nuclear sub commander.

Mostly what the conservatives did in those days was vote to 'mind our own business', same as against Hitler, same as now in China.

Not that that would always have been a bad thing. Not that the liberals always did the right thing. Not that we shouldn't have stayed out of a lot of places. In fact, the history of the last 100 years mostly has the democrats in charge during the wars. And at times they have been liberals, though not always.

It just happens that right now all of the support for a free Taiwan, or a free Hong Kong, or a democratic china, or for that matter troops to keep the peace in Bosnia, comes from the liberal side.
