I think the important thing is to have fun (success), then you can get into the weeds after a while...

Linux will run from an external drive if you want to try it out. (A usb3 flash drive is fine, usb2 is a little slow)

My last Linuxmint install was pain free. It found all the hardware and I was surfing on the Internet after setting the access code for my wireless. Granted, you're a bleeding edge techie, it might choke on your latest video card that costs more than my first car...
