Traveling with children is helping migrants avoid detentionMigrants generally lack understanding of United States immigration law. But they appear to be informed about the basics.

The majority know to request asylum at the border, either at an official port of entry or when they surrender to border agents shortly after sneaking into the country from Mexico.

They know that they are unlikely to remain detained if they travel with a child and that they have a better shot at fending off deportation when they come with a child.

By law, the government cannot keep migrant families in holding facilities at the border for more than 72 hours. It must either transfer them to an immigration detention facility suitable for children or release them.

The government has been letting thousands of detained migrants go free each week because it lacks enough beds to hold them in family detention facilities. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s three residential family centers — two in southern Texas and one in Pennsylvania — can accommodate 3,326 parents

>> it pains me to say this, but he is right, that the United States faces a crisis with its asylum system.

Why should that pain him? That's a question that people need to ask. Diagnosing a problem properly is surely the first step in fixing it.

All else considered, the person who properly diagnoses it ought to be given deference as to presenting the best solution, which I think Trump did a few years ago.

Only you - and of course the sycophant I-node - could turn this into an attack against democrats.

This is an issue that needs to be addressed - I have stated that for years and years if you would only listen instead of creating your own thoughts as to how people think. What have I said? For years I have stated that if people on the right (or left) want to fix the issue of illegal immigrants they need to address the demand. Put emphasis on those who benefit financial by hiring immigrants to clean the toilets in hotels or change soiled linen in hotels. By emphasis I mean make them have skin in the game.

If you don't like the law katelew - work to CHANGE IT. I agree this could cost democrats in the election if they are not careful - if they are not wise. trump and conservtives are using the issue for political advantage - they have no interest in fixing anything. And you are buying it! Hook line and sinker.

Did you read this part:

There needs to be a much greater cooperation with the home countries of these applicants rather than insults, threats and aid freezes.
