OFF TOPIC Rob, while i agree that that the U.S. wanted to send a message to the Russians I don't believe Japan was ready to surrender. They were all but beaten but not ready to surrender. I am convinced that it saved American lives. My uncle fought in okinowa and Iwo Jima Many of the Japanese would rather die than surrender. With reference to civilians I do not value the life of a civilian enemy more than the life of a young american boy fresh out of high school who is drafted with little alternative but to serve. My father and uncles served in WWII they knew people who did not come back. To illustrate the cost of a landed invasion to take Japan consider the FACT that the Russians lost 300,000 men taking the city of Berlin. The Germans were beaten but not ready to surrender.when we revise history we should ask ourselves would i send myself or a loved one to invade Japan to spare the life of enemy civilians. NOT ME. The war was horrible but I feel the U.S. owes no apology to Japan for dropping the bomb. Are you familiar with the war atrocities Japan committed against the Chinese and Koreans for which japan has yet to apologize for. The bottom line is governments and their leaders start wars and the masses suffer. Mike

Rob,,,I agree! ........An added fact---The Japanese Air Force had to be destroyed. The reason is that the implosion methood of Fatman and Little Boy was not the only methood.
....Mr. Hughs constructed the Spruce Goose to carry a Bomb which was incased in footage depths of steel and weighed tons.
....Of course there were other options as welll,,,however these may never be made public.
