JH,

We are quickly moving into the voice marketplace and it is my conjecture that the marketplace itself is changing.

On the low end integrated devices such as our 3600 and 3800 prodcut lines will permit the installation of a single devices at small to medium size branch offices. This will replace the combination of csu/dsu, multiplexer, router, hub and yes even PBX.

Currently Lucent has no similar devices even announced. Nortel has a family of products in this arena, but nothing for the core side (for the data).

The challenge is can we take on inserting voice into our core products using VTOA (voice telephony over atm )and VTIP (voice telephony on IP) to deliver a full picture before they add data capacity to their product line.

They are running scared, because the PBX and Central Office (CO) Switch is a hugely complex device that can be easily obsoleted by newer technology. To see where this trend is heading look at Qwest and other newer companies running fiber rich networks.

The other factor is user acceptance - residential customers still have the last mile problem :-) Once this is resolved, integrated telephony/data will take off because the 'killer app' will be video - voice will go along for the ride.

LU and anyone else can try to gain market share in CSCO_LAND but remember CSCO has a HUGE installed base of happy and satisfied customers. Keeping others out of their market share is enough for great consistent returns. Others will gain market share in small starting out businesses, but CSCO is just going to get bigger.

JRH,

no question about it. I personally own Lucent and Cisco in equal amounts. There won't be a clear winner for a couple of years or more, so hedge your bets and bet on both. I have owned both for more than a year and have made greater than 40% returns on each. I feel that is pretty good. It may not be good enough for some of our thread lurkers here, but it's good enough for me.

JRH, IBD article the other day

mentioned that csco is terrified of Lu because of third layer tech.

I am no technowiz so what does this do to csco ??? Are they dragging their feet getting into layer 3 ??

I want to buy more of csco but may hedge and buy Lu.
