This is a pun. Because trees have leaves, you tell someone you want to get rid of to "make like a tree" ( meaning to be like a tree) "and leave." The joke derives from the fact that you don't want them to actually sprout leaves, you want them to go away. Similarly, you might say, "why don't you make like an atom and split?" (To split meaning to leave, in case you didn't know.)

The tree reference gained a lot of attention when it was used in the movie, Back To The Future. To show what a dummy Biff was, the script called for him to tell Marty McFly, "why don't you make like a tree and get out of here." A joke within a joke.
