Scott,

I completely agree with your statement about distributors with respect to support and pricing.

Right now, pricing difference is not that bad as it used to be, due to the globalization of trading. A bigger problem is stock - European distributors are famous for always having almost all their products everything in backorder.

Being able to order directly in the USA (and shipping with FedEx or DHL) gives about the same price as in Europe and circumvents this backorder problem most of the times.

Support however, is always an issue. The vast majority of distributors and resellers can give none (this gets worse for the ones that are 'certified'). At the end of the message a true story about 3COM product.

That is one of the reasons I have became a consultant: next to the regular consultancy work, I fixing the support problems for all my customers faster than the time they need to get real help themselves.

Back to the globalization: I think it is a good thing that Borland is going on-line. Hopefully, it is realized that the internet is a global network and they sell and ship to any place in the world.

The 3COM story: the ordered LinkSwitch 1000 did have LEDs blinking, but did not function otherwise (i.e. transmit packets over the network or react to the host port). The distributor had only one 3COM certified guy that couldn't be reached most of the time. He did not want to take back the product unless I had a complete report. Having sent that report took him a week to respond asking yet for more details. That day I posted the original report on the 3COM forum - a couple of hours later a US 3COM guy mailed back that it was dead and should be replaced. Only with that mail, I could get my distributor to replace the switch.
