JG:

<but I'd prefer to have someone who is crafty, clever, mean spirited, whatever is needed when the time comes.>

So in other words, you'd prefer Rasputin (the Mad Monk) over Thomas Jefferson?

<<but be an upright boyscout when your in the white house.>>

Well, I guess an easy way would be to remember its the "white house" not "my house" and act appropriately out of respect for the hosts, "the people"

I'm sure no one held a gun to his head when he waved "it" (canadian conservatism) in someone's face and said, "kiss it"

What was that, a royal command! Or an abuse of power?

I am a big fan of Harry S. Truman. I don't think there was ever a more devoted husband and father (see his letter to the critic who criticized his daughter's singing) but also a real tough guy(in the best sense of the word), who stuck by his lights, and tried to do the right thing.

j.g.,
I was following along just fine until you got to <<when it doesn't affect their job, or perhaps even enhances it...>>
Obviously it DOES affect his job-and he is either incredibly stupid or exhibiting breathtaking hubris. And neither characteristic is desirable in the man who heads our country.
I fear I don't buy Christine's "sexual addiction disease process". All that means to me is that he's suffering from a severe case of l'amour propre and is incapable of self-control and good judgment.
Also regardless of whether it's morally or ethically relevant to the adequate performance of his duties- he knew damn well that the American people are not "culturally enlightened" about these things. So why risk it?? Why rub their faces in it? The man is the consummate politician and should know better!...Again- stupid? Or arrogant? I don't care if he's a nice person or not--I agree with you that probably he can't be and do the job well, but boy, I certainly want a SMARTER one in the White House!
