From Jim's Twitter account: "Retired after 40+ years as Writer, Editor, and Publisher; 26 state and national awards including top public service award."

Jim made his home in both Oceanside, CA and Northern Michigan where he was in the middle of renovating his house. When I learned his daughter was a rock and roll bassist who often played with someone I knew, we began to privately chat about her career, and of course how proud he was of her. A few days prior to his death he told me how his daughter surprised him by inviting him on-stage. Though we never met, his posts were very often quite detailed, always personable, to the point you felt like you knew him personally. I'll miss his puns, his love-hate relationship with the San Diego Chargers, and his sense of humor about his beloved but vastly underperforming Cincinnati Reds.

Thank you for posting this from his daughter... I have been actively searching for anything on Jim's status for the past few weeks. I had not found anything until you posted this... Very sad... May he rest in peace...

I am very sorry to hear this. Jim and I chatted privately about his reno. He got a lot of flak for enforcing the no politics rule on the laughter thread, yet he was always polite and approachable. And he never held a grudge. Privately he always wanted to lax the rules without bringing out the "food fight."

Please pass on my condolences to his family. He looked too young and vibrant to die.

My God! That is a shock! Thank you for letting us know. Jim was a trusted and valued friend. Never met, but feel we knew eachother far better than most people with whom I've spent considerable face time, in recent years. Exchanged 100s pvt msgs & posts.

Lost count of the valuable insights, metrics, and savvy he shared which expanded my understanding of music AWA oil & gas and even family relationships. A very rare friendship in my life.

As multi-talented, and gifted a man as I've ever had the privilege of knowing.

Will miss him a lot.

It is a true shocker.. Just a year older than me and similarly active.. An age when you have a huge repertoire of life experience.. And the steam still has plenty of pressure to make things happen. You think in terms of 15/20 more good years. Almost a generation. And that is the way you live.. You have an urgency time wise.. But thankful you can still do so many things.. Each moment is more precious..

A stalwart on both NRS and Big Dog's.. Always worth hearing.. RIP Jim.. Truly I am saddened..

Jim and I first began corresponding as investors on the old Raging Bull AAPL board in the 90's.

There was another guy on that board who harassed and doxxed a bunch of AAPL investors.

I helped ID the guy, and Jim got together with some of the others who the guy had harassed, they took him to court and were awarded damages.

I continued corresponding with him over the years, including here on SI, mostly by PM.

The guy who harassed Jim at RB went on to bigger, more serious crime, and was sentenced to 15 years in prison in June of this year.

I PM'd Jim in July when I heard about the sentencing, and he responded, thanking me and telling me he hadn't heard about it.

I just checked the date he sent that message and it was July 17.

He was a friend.

We had good times together even though we never met, and I will miss him.
