In Normandy "William the Conqueror" was known as "William the Bastard", and his behaviour was simply awful. The Saxon English suffered terribly at the hands of the Normans. William the Conqueror is probably the guy who gave bastards everywhere a bad name.

His story is interesting. Because he was born out of wedlock, but of Royal linage, he had a real rough time of it. However all his relatives died for one reason or another ("the hand of god") and he was left running the show. Having a tough upbringing, he was by this time one really mean sob, and not to be messed with.

The Normans were "North Men" Vikings who moved south and converted to Christianity.

The Normans also invaded South and East in Europe. The men who escaped the battle of Hastings in England moved abroad and became a mercenary army. They helped defend Constantinople during the invasion of the Byzantine Empire , ran into the Normans again, and got beat again. It must of been a tough day for them !
