I hate to tell you this, but that is a Republican idea. They would have people going to charities, so they don't have to pay taxes.

If our democratic society is not the primary entity supporting the people and especially the poor people will suffer like before we had unemployment, social security, medicare, food stamps, etc.

A society should be, first and foremost the guarantor, of peoples health and welfare and that means politics.

"Supporting our democracy and electing and working for the best politicians... is the most important thing a person can do."

"Most of my clan spent a life time in politics helping make this a better country."
Politics doesn't make this a better country; at the moment, I'm inclined to think it makes us worse. Actions make us a better country. Giving money to feed the hungry is doing something. Saying we need to feed the hungry does nothing but it makes you feel good. Saying we need to shelter the homeless does nothing. This is what doing something looks like.

Jimmy found his calling in life and while I see him as a pretty terrible president, he has made up a lot of ground since 1980 as a humanitarian.

It is the same approach being used today by Scott Pressler, who is trying to effect positive change in some of these cities (like LA and Baltimore) that don't seem to be able to find any self-respect. I don't know if his approach will work long term, but at least he's doing something in the way Jimmy is.

Carter is unwilling to let his deteriorating health get in the way of using his time wisely.
