In the long run, preserving any culture in its pure form is a pipe dream. The world is getting smaller. Internet, streaming media, air travel, education ,etc, etc all contribute to cross pollination. Several years ago I read some Arab country (I think Saudi or maybe even Kuwait) banning Valentine's Day as something too foreign for their culture.

Think about that for a moment. You have a country half way around the world. It has minimal (if any) American and western immigrants, and yet they are worried about cultural invasion by the West. So tell me exactly how much should the Americans and Canadians worry about immigrant kids here not assimilating, when even the ones who live in their own country are adopting various cultural bits.

This is not a one-way street. We also get some from them, but to a smaller extent. I eat Chinese food, Thai food, Mexican, etc. We put up a pinata for one of the kid's birthday. My kids and I loved an Indian celebration (Holi Haj?) where we splattered paint all over us and everyone else.

I don't see any of this as a negative. Just because I like Chinese food it doesn't mean I don't love my own food. Just because I splattered colored chalk with Indians, it doesn't mean I don't like Christmas. And if the Indians don't appreciate the Christmas, then that is their loss. I am not insecure about my own traditions and values. Christmas has survived for 2000 years and will continue to do just fine. We don't need a call to arms to save it.
