No, not really. There was a Spanish Queen (sorry, I'm too lazy to go look up the reference now) who had an impotent husband; she was pregnant so often a style of dress was named after her. The mistresses of great men--my favorite is Cecilia Gallerani--were much appreciated at court and not disparaged by anyone.

Further down the food chain, "living together" was extremely common; couples often didn't marry till the husband was on his deathbed, so to legitimate the children.

Trust me: it wasn't a big deal.
