CD-R media is currently free at my local PC shop, $5.99 for package with a $5.99 mail in rebate. Why should I care if they are burnable only ONCE.

Just my opinion.

Yes, but nearly all new CD-R drives are CD-RW drives as
well. You can buy the HP internal CD-rewritable for
around 350-390 if you shop around. Prices are sure to
fall as these are the FIRST units out.

The CD-Rewritable CD media still is a bit expensive at
14 bucks a pop, but will get cheaper every day. It's
already over 5 times cheaper per megabyte than a Zip.

Within 12 months, every CD drive sold will be re-writable.

Let me specify that the re-writable CD-Rom I bought is re-recordable media. The re-writable disks are $ 15.00. The writable disks are $2.00. With the re-writable I can burn a CD, then write over it as I see fit. I see this as the same market.
