As a rural consumer, Costco is about 2 hrs away. I pay a $50 membership to Sam's Club..free shipping on everything. I can order toilet paper, shows up at my door a few days later.

As to Costco, been a member all the way back to the old Price Club. Under their retired CEO, seem to remember that their markup is a flat 5%. Also their actual profit used to be all from membership fees ... profit from sales used to equal expenses.

Have no idea where things stand now nor whether the new CEO is following in olds footsteps.

Burford capital is a pretty murky business, imo, both from a governance as well as from a profit perspective. They have one large win (Petersen case against Argentine) and many smaller losses, so it’s very hard estimate the average profitability of the business. They also do a lot of non cash valuation of on going cases so earnings are not equal to cash flows. Too hard for me and I decided to stay away.
