I maybe quick to judge but I judged based on the info YOU provided. You clearly described this as a disagreement between you and your wife. No mention whatsoever about kids who clearly had a say in this.

As far as the previous owner’s claim goes that the dog had been house trained … Hard / impossible to imagine a 10 month old dog living with 2 other dogs and 2 people in an apartment and not being house trained. The place would be a “pig pen” reeking to high heaven. A case not just for Animal Aid but for the Health Department.

It sounds like you meant to do a good thing without considering all ramifications and without having family consensus. We don’t have kids. So, I only have to worry about my wife’s vote. I would never dream of bringing a canine into our home unless I had her unequivocal support. Every time we do this, we go through hours / days / weeks of discussing pros and cons while spending as much time as possible with the canine we are considering at their home turf prior to finalizing the deal.

Our latest adoptee, Bella … We made 3 250km round trips with overnight stays to get to know her and to give her a chance to get to know us. In the end it turned out to be a unanimous vote and she has turned out to be the closest thing to a perfect dog I can think of.

Not saying any of this to prove you wrong / critize you. Just my thoughts on dog rescues. They are imho no different to child adoption. You need to get to know what you are in for. You need a plan to mitigate negatives and foster positives.
