You are not getting it.

The dog was abused and warehoused in a cage for most of its life. The owner loved the dog, but was clearly out of his depth. So he kept the pooch in cage *most* of the time. In his words, he was scared that when the dog was out, it would chew out the furniture...which is right, when the dog is not getting the right amount of mental and physical stimulation. Side note - the dog had free reign of my house and it never chewed a thing because it had the environment he needed.

I saw an opportunity to save the dog. It could have gone either way with my family, and I wasn't going to let the chance of disagreement stop me from helping it. Had the dog been housebroken, then I would have reassessed the situation in two weeks, by which time it was likely that everyone would have warmed up to the puppy. But not being housebroken put an end that line of thought. Still, the end result was that the dog had a couple of good days and we found a suitable home for it. I wasn't going to let him go back to his old life. If I had not intervened, it was less likely to find a suitable owner for the dog. So I am fine with how it turned out.

As for you rushing to judgement, everyone should always assume that they have incomplete information. Wrong or incomplete information is a fact of life with everyone in the real world and daily life. And this is especially true for internet chats. Nobody is going to type in a long essay with a 100% factual info so that you can be the judge.

OT - You may want to watch the Star Trek Episode #102 (Darmok) or google the phrase "Darmok and Jalad at Tanagra." Aside from being one of the most celebrated TNG episodes, it highlights the dangers of jumping to conclusions based on incomplete info between people who have different modes of communication.
