Panetta makes clear that he puts the good of the Democrat Party above where he put the good of the country. Panetta has a vested interest in a healthy Democratic party. Since Dianne Feinstein (the frontrunner in all the polls) decided not to run for CA governor last week, there is lots of speculation that Panetta will run. But he'll need help from high places IMO. (There also has been speculation that DiFi didn't run because she'd rather been Gore's v.p. If that's true, she could get her wish sooner than she expected.)
