It seems the corona virus has triggered GUEED (Gold Up Everything Else Down)

Sold PALL, covered some Puts, sold other calls, bought Puts on QQQ

Battened down some hatches

Sold straddles and went long GLD

Avoiding airplane travel, and am encountering nature at a heritage hotel here in situ, in Hong Kong, albeit at location about 2 hours away from home. Saw pink dolphins yesterday.

In HK we protect heritage by making use of the heritage. Seems to work quite well. Only 10 rooms, and very nice restaurant. Can only be approached by boat (10 min) or by walking a path (20 min) from nearby village.

Reflexologist reports that her village of 191 folks has 35 folks returnee-visiting from nearby Wuhan, and 4 of them had symptoms were led away and isolated.

The Coconut is mix-feeling-ed, that on the one hand the schools shall remain closed until 17th February (supposed to open 3rd February), which may well mean summer break delayed, affecting her dance training, and her trip to South Africa 7th February (originally got permission to skip school), to Tanzania in March, and through 5 China cities in April.

Jack and Erita, after conversing w/ me re SARS 2003, decided to unload all shares except KL, SBGL, and GDXJ, readying cash to take advantage of possible spreading panic.

Corona Virus update

the data update at 1700 hrs HKT on Sun, Jan 26 is attached.

the increase in declared cases in China has now risen to 2029 now from 1287 yesterday at same time - an increase of 58% on the day.

global declared cases have risen from 1322 to 2078 an increase of 57% on the day.

There is one additional case in Hong Kong bringing the total to 6 from 5 yesterday. on the same basis Singapore has gone from 3 to 4, Macau from 2 to 5 and Thailand from 5 to 7; Malaysia from 3 to 4; Japan 2 to 3; Australia from 1 to 4; the US from 2 to 3; and Canada declared its first case.

global fatalities are 56 this evening compared to 41 yesterday.

Cases for the Wuhan Coronavirus globally are now 25% of the total for SARS. The level of fatalities is far lower. On the basis of official statistics our data base uses, the fatality rate for SARS was 10% (17% in Hong Kong). the declared level of fatalities for Wuhan Coronavirus so far is 2.7%.

as the data is becoming less volatile based on better reporting in China, we can very tentatively say that this virus is more contagious than SARS in the same time period since first declared case but less deadly. this is an observation not a judgement as the official figures can change and the virus can mutate.

the next update will be tomorrow morning HKT.

Update as at a few minutes ago ...

On Jan 29, 2020, at 7:50 PM, D wrote:
Coronavirus (N) confirmed cases since 1900hrs HKT on Tuesday 28 & Wednesday 29 at 1900 HKT:
  1. China confirmed cases rose from 4562 to 6055 and increase of 1493 (32%) compared to 1758 in the previous 24 hrs.
  2. Global Confirmed cases rose from 4631 to 6146 (32%) an increase of 22 cases for countries outside China.
  3. Confirmed cases outside China rose by 22 to 91. Higher than preciously reported confirmed cases of Coronavirus (N) were announced by: HK (8 to 10); Taiwan (7 to 8); Thailand (8 to 14); Malaysia (4 to 7); Japan (4 to 7); Canada (1 to 2); Germany (0 to 4). The United Arab Emirates confirmed its first case.
New confirmed cases in China dropped from 1758 to 1493 on the basis of last 24 hrs compared to previous 24 hours and first derivative (the change in the rate of change in new cases) was negative for the first time in China (-265) . This may be data issues and reporting in inadequacies. But if confirmed it would mark a significant reduction in risk perception for financial markets. wait for tomorrow to judge!

Fatalities remained at 132 today -all in china. this indicates a fatality rate of 2% for Coronavirus (N) compared to 10% for SARS (globally).

the next update will be at 0900 hrs on Thursday, January 30, 2020.
