Not that I live, or ever have lived, in Indiana or Ohio, but I did make a few bucks in high tech in the more-than-mildly-isolated corner of the US known as the San Juan Islands. Californication isn't the only place in the US with smart people. I'm sure there are just as many smart people in California as there are in Ohio.
