Indonesian Rupiah Falls 15% to Dollar as Lending Dries Up

The Indonesian rupiah lost as much as 15 percent in early trading as no solution emerged to the country's deepening debt crisis and international banks continued to freeze lending to the country. The rupiah fell as low as 15,000 a dollar from 12,750 at the end of Asian trading on Friday. Last week, the currency lost 34 percent of its value, as Indonesia's banking system almost ground to a halt with several international banks freezing lending to the country, analysts said. Standard Chartered, ABN- Amro Bank, Bank of America and Rabobank International were among banks that stopped handling rupiah trades in the inter-bank market, traders said. Analysts and traders estimate that the central bank, Bank Indonesia, spent between US$5 billion and US$6 billion last week to buy rupiah.
