Well, just being logical, how can Starr say that it was illegal to retape Linda and Monica, when the Attorney General and a panel of federal judges declared it legal by authorizing it?

I think the press coverage has been very fair, for the most part. These guys seem to be genuinely embarrassed, as are most of us. I am not sure I would compare this to Diana. She was a private citizen, whose every photograph was valuable because of the world's love of her. I think almost everyone is quite sick of looking at Billy!!

I have always thought Diana was wonderful, and one of the most refreshing things about her is that she was very open about having all sorts of sordid flaws like being bulemic, trying to kill herself, having love affairs, and suffering from depression. Her very honesty about her faults attracted people to her. In the same vein, I think most Americans accepted that Clinton was not a faithful husband, and had discounted this. I also loved Diana's long, large English nose, incidentally, which she wore proudly and did not try to alter with cosmetic surgery. Nor did she destroy her nasal cartilage with cocaine!! (old Feelings thread theme, not really a part of this discussion)

I think if Clinton had just acknowledged that he did have an affair with Gennifer Flowers, if he did, and settle the court case with Paula Jones, if it had any merit whatsoever, after he was elected last time, he would not be in this situation today. I really disagree with you in that I think the president's judgment, not his behavior, is the primary question here.

I would say that I would hope that any woman whose father had sex with her would report it immediately. This is a crime if the child is a minor, and not a question of sexual privacy at all, in my opinion.

Killing a goldfish? Well, that is very cruel, and would indicate that the president is a sadist. I certainly wouldn't vote for someone who did not revere fish, because it would show a basic character flaw that I find disturbing. <<) ; ^ )

Excellent post, and this most of all:

Regarding the President's office for all those who will hold it in the future... I don't believe that just ANY perjury on any issue or incident is grounds for impeachment. If a President lied about flushing his goldfish down the toilet would that lead to an impeachment? There has to be a line drawn on content, not just IF ANY lie of ANY KIND can be found.

J.G.,

I have to agree with your staement 100%. This is a very dangerous precedent.

I do not think Clinton will be found guilty of perjury. I also do not think he will be found guity of obstruction of justice. For the perjury charge to stick, there must be an unambiguous question and he must give an unambiguous answer that is untrue. Everything I have heard to date about this matter is ambiguous questions and ambiguous answers. The obstruction of justice charge is even looser.

So for a lot of the people the question has become can they impeach him for sexual activity? A lot of people would like to see him impeached for this. But then that rationale applied to congress would cause the removal of probably 60% of our Congressmen and Senators. The Kinsey report has about 61% of married men reporting that they have had sex outside of marriage. I am sure the number is similarly high for women. Otherwise, who are they going to do it with?
