re: income redistribution

Re-cycling and fuel efficiency are wonderful when they are driven by consumer demand. They are excuses for Government control when dictated from above. Also, make sure that fuel efficient cars/devices are fuel efficient for their ENTIRE LIFE CYCLE. For electric cars, make sure you understand the fuel costs of producing and transmitting the electricity. Internal combustion engines are far more efficient than fossil-fueled electric power generation (coal/oil are approx. 33% efficient and they are still the predominant method of producing electric.) Also, what are the environmental costs of producing and disposing of the batteries (containing VERY toxic substances).

I'm just saying that the environmental issues are very very complicated and there is precious little scientific evidence that points to drastic and costly measures at this time. More study is required IMHO. Also, remember that there are costs associated with everything and often unintended consequences (refer to auto air bags). I also read a study once that pointed out that a recent rule requiring parents to purchase full-fare tickets for children on airplanes (thereby accomodating a child seat) caused lots of kids to die in auto accidents (very un-safe mode of transport) when parents who would otherwise have flown chose to drive for cost reasons.
