<<The on going discussion about xDSL modems being standard equip. in PCs for Christmas 98 is premature >>

You put that very gently. It's utter nonsense. Compaq, the announced leader, won't put these in as standard until there is sufficient support from the telco's to ensure that it won't just sit there in the machine, a useless waste of money waiting for the Baby Bells to get off their butts. The modems will have to be available, otherwise the ROBC's aren't going to capitalize their equipment costs. But this is way different from making them standard. I don't see a snowball's chance in hell of the telco's having this widely supported in 11 months. The question is, will the ROBC's have the system installed and working widely enough by Christmas '99 for the modems to be offered as a standard option?
